Pharmacy Benefit Managers are third-party administrators who manage prescription drug plans from employers “plan sponsors”. There are approximately 76 PBMs administering prescription drug plans for more than 215 million Americans. The prescription industry is complex and highly technical – with PBMs connecting plan sponsors, pharmaceutical manufacturers and pharmacists. While PBMs can provide industry knowledge to plan sponsors, h ow they operate is often unclear.
